Have the children in your practice been talking about the attacks?

There's been a lot of talk about it: Kids are just like adults. They can't believe a jet full of passengers could fly into a building filled with people. It upsets them greatly. Kids are also very worried about future attacks. But as New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said, it's important to get life back to some semblance of normalcy.

What is a good way to reduce a child’s anxiety?

Playing a sport is a great way to reduce stress. It forces you to focus all your energy on one thing and forget about the world around you for at least a little while. Sports are also a great way to create a sense of community, which is very important for children who are feeling uneasy right now.

Children need the proper equipment to stay safe on the playing ground. Let’s begin with a football helmet. You say when buying one, don’t go bargain hunting.

That's right. Head injuries are among the most common types of injuries, particularly in high-contact sports like football. Parents often ask me, "Is it safe for my kids to play football?" Although it's dangerous, it's still statistically much safer than driving in a car. But it's important to recognize injuries.

We worry most about concussions, which are head injuries that may or may not involve the loss of consciousness. The important thing here is, if a player has a headache, speak to the athletic trainer or his pediatrician. Concussions are potentially serious injuries, so it's important that the helmet is fitted properly--1 inch above the brow line and ears in the ear holes.

    What about shoulder pads?

It's important that these are properly fitted. The shoulder pad should come over and protect the outside, just over the muscle. There needs to be enough room to move the neck and to fit a collar if the athlete wishes. Shoulder pads are sized for position (quarterback versus lineman), so you need to talk to your coach before getting these. It is important to not just use shoulder pads that have been handed down from an older brother or friend.

You say that a neck roll is very popular with certain players.

This piece of equipment obviously protects the neck and is very popular with lineman, but I encourage all players to use one. Neck rolls are very helpful in preventing injuries, but it's important a player also have strong neck muscles, which can go a long way in preventing injuries.

    A rib pad?

A rib pad obviously protects the ribs and it is something I encourage all high school football players to wear. Some of this equipment may be cumbersome at times but there is nothing more important than your child's safety.

We’ve just been talking about football, which is almost exclusively a boy’s sport. Let’s go over gear that girls' soccer and field hockey players need. Let’s begin with a mouth guard.

There are record numbers of female athletes that have more than doubled in the past 15 years and they need protection too. People think about it just in football, but we see more dental injuries in soccer because the mouth isn't protected, so it's important to use a mouthguard in soccer and field hockey. Again, this is no time to go bargain shopping. It's very important to get the right size.

    Shin guards?

This is mandatory equipment. You should get good ones to protect from getting kicked or hit with the ball. Many athletes only use shin guards during games, but they need to be worn in practice too.

    Cleats?

Cleats prevent you from slipping on the playing field, and as you can imagine, children can get seriously injured when they fall. It is imporant that cleats are fitted properly. If your feet are slipping around inside they won't do you much good.

    Water bottle?

Heat illness, which in its most serious form is called "heat stroke," can be fatal. In fact we've seen several deaths already this year. All athletes need to drink, and that starts with prehydrating 24 hours before a game. Then during the game, every 20 minutes, especially if the heat and humidity are high. We call this the heat index, and it's worst if the heat and 삼척출장마사지 humidity are both above 80. (The 80/80 rule)

    How about an asthma inhaler?

Many people may not know about exercise-induced asthma, a common form that includes shortness of breath during exercise, with wheezing. It doesn't only occur in asthmatics, so people who have wheezing or shortness of breath with exercise need to talk with their doctor.©MMII CBS Worldwide Inc. All Rights Reserved. Over the weekend, New York City officials responded to more than 100 calls about suspicious packages and powders. People are clearly nervous, especially at NBC headquarters--the only place in this city where anthrax was discovered.

Throughout the weekend, people in New York and other parts of the country have been reminded that anthrax is not contagious, but the anxiety and alarm seem to be.

Three more New Yorkers, a detective and two lab technicians who handled contaminated letters at NBC, have been exposed to anthrax spores. Now, a total of five people have been exposed. But only one, an assistant to Tom Brokaw, has developed the disease, and 청도출장샵 she is responding to treatment.

"We've seen over 600 colleagues. They've been screened, they've been tested, they've been treated," says Andrew Lack, NBC News president.

Stil,l New Yorkers are on edge.

Mayor Rudy Giuliani says, "A balance has to be struck here between sufficient precautions and making people so frightened and so upset they're not going to be able to conduct their lives."

There are five more cases of possible exposure in Boca Raton, Florida, at the American Media building. One employee there died from anthrax, and Stephanie Dailey was exposed to the bacteria.

"I was first--you know--shocked that it was positive, but I was like, 'Okay, what do we do now? What procedure I need to do now?' And I just keep taking the Cipro, and I'll be okay," says Dailey.

In Reno, Nevada, Microsoft received a contaminated letter from Malaysia. Six employees there have been tested.

Barbara Hunt, Washoe County, Nevada, health officer, says, "None have symptoms and thus far none have shown test results indicating they were exposed."

At the New York Times, Judith Miller recieved a letter containing a powder substance that tested negative.

"Every one of these false letters--hoaxes--has to be responded to as if it were the real thing," says Miller.

After a weekend of false alarms, John Ashcroft, the US attorney general, promised aggressive prosecution for anyone maliciously fanning the fear.

"This is not a joking matter. This is a matter of seriousness and our resources should not be disrupted and diverted because individuals think this is an opportunity to do something that . . . is very damaging and shouldn't be done," says Ashcroft.

On November 7, 1996, 48 Hours profiled Debbie's struggle with her weight and her resulting medical problems and her surgery. Two months after the surgery we returned to see she had lost 60 pounds. We decided to contact her 5 years later and see how she was doing. The answer is, terrific. She weighs 170 to 175 pounds, feels great, is remarried, and has a second child--something she never would have been able to do without the surgery.

Before the procedure, she was suffering from numerous serious medical problems. She went on countless diets and just couldn't stick to any of them. Sometimes she would lose weight, la 카지노 sometimes she would gain weight instead of losing it. As far as medical problems went, she had swelling in her fingers, ankles, and feet; she had gallstones from all of the weight gains and losses she experienced; she had high blood pressure, a hernia, the early stages of diabetes, and sleep apnea. She would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for breath, and to prevent this she had to sleep with a machine and mask over her face to make sure she had enough oxygen. All of these medical problems are associated with being more than 100 pounds overweight. The condition is known as morbid obesity.

In addition to the physical toll, morbid obesity takes a psychological toll. Debbie always felt ashamed and never wanted to do anything. She was divorced, had a 4-year-old son, and lived in a trailer. She never wanted to do anything with her son except eat and watch TV.

On the 48 Hours special, Dr. George Cowan, the doctor that treated Debbie from the University of Tennessee, said that people with this condition have an enormous biological drive to eat. They take in more food than they need no matter how miserable they are being large: They can't help it. For these people, the only option may be what Debbie chose--a surgical procedure that essentially shrinks the size of their stomach by sealing off the majority of the stomach that would normally take in food.

Like any surgery--and more so for an obese person--the surgery has its risks, but for people like Debbie with morbid obesity the risk is greater for them not to do the surgery. For Debbie, her doctor said that over 5 to 10 years without the surgery, the risk of having a very serious problem would have been very high. This was how he convinced her insurance company to pay for the expensive procedure, which costs $15,000 to $20,000.

During the surgery, the doctor cuts the stomach and seals off a small portion of the stomach with staples. He reattaches the intestine to a new smaller stomach.

The thinking is that if the stomach is smaller, you will eat less. This is the only thing that works fosignificant weight loss for people with this problem. So basically the part of the stomach that is sealed of is now bypassed by all food. It will not see food again.

Two months after the surgery, 48 Hours returned to see how Debbie was doing. At that point she felt wonderful and had lost 60 pounds. She said it was as if she was living a dream when the weight started to come off. Before the surgery she could eat a whole pizza without even thinking about it and not feel full at all. Now she can only eat in very small portions. The surgery gives her no choice but to eat in small potions, thereby changing her eating habits dramatically. She said she planned to lose another 50 pounds. She was thrilled that people no longer look at her and say--look at that fat or pregnant woman. "People are looking at me smiling. I feel self-confident and happy for the first time in my life."©MMII CBS Worldwide Inc. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed

"I just talked to leader Daschle. His office received a letter. It had anthrax in it," said Bush.

-image-As stunned reporters soon discovered, police had already blocked off Majority Leader Dashle's office and isolated staffers while hazardous-materials teams combed the area with special equipment . The alert was triggered when a staffer found powder in an envelope.

Daschle said, "Just as soon as it became clear that there was a suspicious substance in the envelope, we contacted the capitol police and the capitol physician."

The first tests confirmed suspicions and Lieutenant Dan Nichols from the capitol police said, "We conducted an examination of the material that was in the letter and it tested positive for anthrax. I should stress, though, that this is merely a field test. This is a preliminary test that we do in the field. It's a quick-and-dirty determination of what we are dealing with."

Like the envelope containing anthrax sent to NBC in New York, the one received here was mailed from Trenton, New Jersey. It was postmarked September 18th. How many of Dashle's staffers were directly exposed wasn't disclosed, but 50 were being tested.

Dr. John Eisold, a physician from the capitol, said, "They have been swabbed, and they will be tested to see if they do indeed have the spores. In the meantime, we'll treat them with Cipro."

The incident touched off reports of suspicious packages in at least 12 other offices here. There was no announcement that any of them contained anthrax, but as a precaution, capitol offices were directed to open no more mail. It is being collected and 카지노 승률 screened.

For the first time anyone could remember, public tours of the capitol were cancelled until further notice.

Sixto Rodriguez may resurface with a new album.

-image-Although the Detroit singer-songwriter, who rose to fame in the Oscar-nominated "Searching for Sugar Man" film, isn't promising anything, he told Rolling Stone he's considering releasing a third album, his first new studio set in 40-plus years.

Rodriguez said he has been mulling over the idea with Steve Rowland, the producer behind his earlier albums. The 70-year-old musician said, "He told me to send him a couple of tapes, so I'm gonna do that. I certainly want to look him up, because now he's full of ideas."

But Rodriguez says he doesn't have any concrete plans to hit the studio.

    More in Music

Rodriquez has had quite the career resurgence over the past year. He essentially fell into obscurity after his first two albums were deemed "flops" in the early 1970s. He later returned to work in construction and quit the music game. But those same albums caught on in South Africa, making Rodriguez one of the area's most beloved music artists.

The story is told in the 2012 film, "Searching For Sugar Man," which is up for 과천출장마사지 best documentary feature at the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.

New album or not, the world will see a lot more of Rodriguez in the months to come. He has just been added to the Coachella lineup for April and will be on tour throughout the spring.

-image-Her mother can only hope Hanna’s tumor was fully removed before the cancer began to spread.

"Just to see her as sick as she was . . . I mean, she was just a healthy little girl up to that point," Laura Hunter says of her daughter.

A ray of hope is beginning to shine on the Hunter family, reports CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews.

Researchers at Children’s Hospital in Washington report they've found a set of 85 genes that metastasize, or spread, Hanna's form of cancer.

They have found the genes that order these tumors to fan out.

"This represents a gene that is very highly turned on in an aggressive cancer," says Dietrich Stephan, lead author of the study. "For the first time, we have information about what causes these kids to die. Brain tumors and kids, for a long time, have been a real mystery."

The identification of these genes could one day have a major impact on brain cancer patients like Hanna. In the future, doctors will know which children need radiation therapy and which children can be spared the ordeal.

Today, radiation therapy is standard, 구미출장안마 even though doctors have warned Hanna's mother it may permanently damage her ability to learn.

"It will allow us to say, 'This particular patient may not need whole brain and spine radiation,' which is really the key to this disease and all the bad side effects we see in treatment," says Dr. Tobey MacDonald of Children's Hospital.

The researchers also found another potential breakthrough. They believe that the class of so-called "smart drugs" already on the market to neutralize cancers like leukemia also may work to defeat these genes for brain cancer.

"Plain and simple--we think these drugs are going to work to save not only lives, but the quality of lives in kids," Stephan said.

Hanna still has as much to fear from her radiation therapy as from her cancer. Now, from the genetic code, may come a treatment that both heals and does no harm.©MMII CBS Worldwide Inc. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed
